Rummy is a 13 card game, randomly dealt with each player without any control of anyone; once cards are distributed, always analyse your starting rummy hands.

To make a valid declaration, you need to have at least two sequences, one of them being a ‘Pure Sequence’ and rest of the cards melded into sets or sequence. What is a pure sequence? Pure sequence is also known as ‘life’ in rummy. It is nothing but a sequence without using substitute ‘Joker’ cards. David Parlett suggests that Contract Rummy card games followed on from Contract Bridge which was popular in the 1930's. Other names for Contract Rummy include Shanghai Rummy, Liverpool Rummy, Joker Rummy, Progressive Rummy, Combination Rummy, King Rummy and Continental Rummy.

Analysing your rummy hands can be the first step towards victory; people desire to get a perfect hand but converting a bad hand into a good one is the real trick. We are here to help you with hand analysis in rummy games.

The Dream Hand

A dream hand contains all the favourable cards needed to win, like an almost ready-made sequence or set. The probability of getting a dream hand is very rare, like one in a million. It is vital for beginners to know hand analysis, mostly if they have to make the first move. Players create a common mistake that is declaring in haste and end up losing, so make your sequence or set with concentration and patience and cross-check your cards before declaring. Always ensure you have a pure sequence in hand.

The Winning Hand

The dream hand is a far-fetched dream but not the winning hand, take a closer look at your cards; if you have a pre-made pure sequence and other sets with one card missing, it is a winning hand. If you don’t have a pure sequence, make it in the first moves by utilising the remaining cards and jokers. Winning chances are very high with this starting rummy hand, and if you know hand analysis, with few actions, you can claim victory.

The Good Hand

The hand doesn’t have any pre-made sequences but consists of one or more jokers; if you have two sequential cards or of the same rank, use the joker to make a combination. You might have realized by now how vital hand analysis is. When you get such easy cards, complete the game with the right strategies and techniques, and remember the starting rummy hand should be pure.

The Difficult Hand

It can be a bit tricky to work with this hand; you need to draw and discard many cards to form a valid sequence or set. There have been instances of joker being used too. You can either choose to play or opt for the first drop; a middle drop is advisable when there is no melding scope. A problematic hand can be turned into a rummy winning hand if you have the right skills and apply the right strategies.

The Weak Hand

Every rummy player’s nightmare is weak rummy hands, containing no matching cards or joker, only high cards with no possible combination. This needs a substantial time in melding and declaring but good for us, the probability of getting a weak hand is low. If you get one, go for an initial drop or play with low stakes.

Being familiar with hand analysis is very important in winning rummy. You may get hands that don’t fit the above categories so, always observe your hands and formulate a plan of action.

How can a joker be used in a valid show?
